"Did not effect consumers until after the war"
When the war started we were just beginning to recover from the "great depression", jobs were still scarce, wages low, and unemployment still high.
I was ten in 1941 and "down on the farm" I would estimate our income tripled by 1945. rationing had little effect on farmers since they were allowed more gas, tires etc and raised nearly all our own food. The only commodities we were ever short of was sugar (which we needed for canning and meat curing). and shotgun & 22 cal shells (which we needed for hunting).
As for the other folks conditions vastly improved, there was no unemployment and wages increased considerably, however, they did suffer from shortages due to the rationing.
