When you talk of Anderson you have to put all possiblities on the table on his motives.
There are many questions about his actions.
1. Was he in a conspiracy acting out a designed plan?
2. Was he acting out the youthful fantasies of General Scott?
3. Was he a paranoid coward?
4. Was he unreliable, insubordinate and unskillful?
5. Was he a brave and resourceful military leader?
Most of the written evidence points at number 2 and 3. Although some believe there is evidence that it was number 1, although I'm not 100% positive.
