He may have been going through a personal crisis. I don't have his CSR's but at some time just after this, he resigned and joined the Confederate forces. He is my hubbys GGGrandfather. His grave is very near Stephen Mallory's. Fredrick Clinton Humphreys was a Major with the Confederacy at wars end. Spent most of the war in Georgia at Colombus Arsenal and in Americus. I've often wondered at his close proximity to Andersonville and what his thoughts must have been.
His father was Gad Humpreys, the Indian Agent to the Seminole out of St Augustine during the first part of the Seminole War. He was replaced because, the feeling is, that he was sympatheic to the Seminole and the Seminole liked and trusted him. They are descendants of founders of the Massachussetts Bay Colony so it's not like they didn't have a 'history' with the US. It must have taken F.C. a lot of soul searching to change sides.
I've been trying to get some independant thoughts on his actions because it's hard to be objective being in the 'family' so to speak. If Huger had been called to Washington and F.C. was left in charge, one has to wonder if he was going along with the take over. I just don't know the answer. Sounds like he was asking for orders but they either didn't come fast enough or could the militia have decided that if Huger was gone to push the issue?
