Re: What if you were Major Anderson?

I am searching for a more defined event.

But one thing that seemed to have been in favor of Anderson moving to Sumpter on the 26th was that there was a storm, or at least bad nasty weather, which along with the dark of night covered his movement completely.

Also, Anderson didn't completely abandon Fort Moultrie. There was a detail of maybe 4 to 10 officers and men left behind at Fort Moultire. And were reported to still be in command of the fort on the 27th. No doubt continuing the destruction of the military function of Fort Moultrie.

According to the newspapers the people of Charleston did not realize that the moved had been made until Anderson raised the garrison flag over Fort Sumter where a flag had not previously been flown.

So I would say that there was NO impending threat to Fort Moultrie since it appears that no one was keeping a close watch on the place.

Charleston, Dec. 27.
--12 ½ o'clock.--Major Anderson states that he evacuated Fort Moultrie in order to allay all discussions about that post, and at the same time strung then his own position at ← Fort Sumter.

Charleston,Dec. 27.--1 o'clock.--Capt. Foster, with a small force, remains at Fort Moultrie. Several military companies have been ordered out, and a collision is not improbable.

The military of Charleston are ordered out to protect the magazines and arsenals in this locality.

It is reported that several military corps from the interior are on route for Charleston.

[There was no further news from Charleston last night, up to a late hour. It is believed that restrictions have been placed by the State authorities on the telegraph office there, which prevents the transmission of intelligence concerning the military or civil action taken by the State.]

Baltimore, Dec. 27.

--A reliable dispatch from Charleston this morning to the American says that the Government troops have abandoned Fort Moultrie, spiked the guns and gone over to Fort Sumter, which commands the harbor. War has begun.

The regular report confirms this statement, and adds that Fort Moultrie is on fire. Only four men remain in it, the rest being in Fort Sumter.

There is intense excitement in Charleston.

The Convention is still in session.

You will notice that it is the article from the Baltimore Newspaper reported in the Richmond newspaper which declares "WAR has begun".

It does not appear that there was any organized threat to Anderson because of the need to call out the State Militia to protect and control other installations.
