There's a few dots I'm not getting connected here. True, some is for personal knowledge, but it may play a part in the events.
For instance---FC Humphreys was born in Florida and so was his wife. His father worked for the US Government and after his tenure as Indian Agent was over, he was a Judge. He and his wife were born in Conn. and Mass. FC Humphreys family came over with the Winthrop Fleet. They had deep roots in the north. The only reason they weren't in the north was Gad's job so one could have assumed that FC's leanings were northern ones. This alone isn't enough to be sure that he would feel that way but he was in the US Army with a pretty good rank.
Not having his OR's, I can only wonder if he faced any repercussions over the loss of the Charleston Arsenal or some other event, such as knowledge of some type of underhanded dealings would cause him to resign just after Ft Sumter fell into South Carolina's hands? The 40 rifles thing is rather confusing. The Aresnal was lost to the SC Militia while he was in charge. Could that have been by some design of his own? What made him decide to go with the Confederacy?
We've connected other players in this drama and found some things that could lead to conspiricy if one looks long enough. Could FC have figured this out? Just too many loose ends and smoking guns. A couple of years ago we thought we'd put a pretty good scenario together for Ft Sumter, now, it looks like it could be a deeper well than we thought.
