According to Wikipedia old Eli only promoted the idea and never actually did it. The idea came from France. The internet is full of websites that mention that Lawrence and Robbins were the first to successfully make rifles with interchangeable parts on a mass scale. They won a contract with Enfield to produce rifles with interchangeable parts, the first to do so.
