Abner Doubledays memories...

For a different view of Fort Sumter read Doubleday's article.

Keep in mind when this was written Anderson and Floyd are dead.

One of his points for the sudden movement into Fort Sumter was..."A circumstance now occurred which to my mind was proof positive that Floyd intended to betray us and the Government he represented. I have no doubt it hastened our departure from Fort Moultrie. He directed Captain Foster to have the guns mounted in Fort Sumter immediately. It was plain enough, from demonstrations already made, that the moment this was done the rebels would seize the fort, and turn its powerful armament upon us. There was no one there to resist them."

I cannot find any such order. Forster took his commands from his commanding officer in the Engineering Corps not the Secy of War. Captain Foster reported upon his arrival in early November that Fort Sumter had a number of guns already mounted and by the early December the guns on the 1st and 3rd tier were all mounted. So I do not understand Doubleday's reasons.
