Methinks Professor Clavin is a bit dog barking. I do not intend to argue the war, but the level of education in this country has gone down since teachers becasme unionized and entrenched in their positions. Literacy was higher in the nineteenth century than it is now. I have seen lists of books taken on wagon trains going west; they included some classics, as well as then current literature. The literacy rate was in the 90 percent range. I don't currently have the source for that, but I have read it in the past. In my work I have very often seen college graduates who could not write a simple declarative sentence. Never mind which side, let's at least teach our children to read! Stan
