Re: Mixed Races, Indian and White

I was just discussing this situation or similar situation of the Creek Government. What split the Creek Tribe during the War for Southern Independence was the argument of Full Bloods and Mix Bloods in the Government. The Full Bloods did noy want the mix bloods to have any say in the Tribal Government. Thus the two factions split one going North (Upper Creeks) and the other going with the South (Lower Creeks. No slavery wasn'y a factor Chief Opothleyahola owned slaves and at the Battle of Round Mountain I.T. there were apprx. 300 free blacks and slave present on the Union side.

Today the age old argument in the Tribal Government still rages. But today it's not just that the person is a mix blood, but what degree of blood that should be allowed a voting voice. Some think that a quarter blood is not enough for a voice others believe 1/8th is enough.

Incidently, some Okmulgee Blacks have sued the Creek Tribe for benefits from the Tribe because their family is listed on the Freedmen Rolls of the Tribe, no word how it has come out but some Creeks are fighting it.
