Re: NC Clothing and the Blockade

Low and behold I have some details for you.

Cadet grey woool, piped in royal blue on the collar edge and shoulder straps. No center seem on back panel. Made in Limerick Ireland by Peter Tait and Company. It is known that 4,400 Tait jackets and pants were imported on the steamer Evelyn in December 1864 to the port of Wilmington, N. C. This example was worn by Private Garrett Gouge of the 58th N.C. Infantry.

"From June 1863 to January 1865, N.C. imported approximately total, grey wool cloth for 250,000 suits of uniforms; 12,000 overcoats; 50,000 blankets; and leather and shoes for 250,000 pairs. The cloth imported is believed to have been dark bluish-grey and is referred to as 'blue' or 'English blue'. Governor Vance later estimated that the state had on had 92,000 suits of uniforms at the wars end."

I have another photograph of the detail of the button holes and seems on a Peter Tait jacket worn by Private Alfred M. Goodwin of Sturdivant's Virginia Battery that shows the stitches are made by a sewing machine, not by hand. I could post that photo if you wish.
