I never said the Southern Papers didn't distort the story. I know they did. But the Northern papers had more of an axe to grind than the South. They had bought into the "Free the Slaves" story.
I have read both accounts, including General Forrest account of the Battle, note I said Battle.
When I started to study the War for Southern Independence, it was to learn what caused my ancestors to fight for such a cause as slavery. I was gathering information on them and where they lived. But while always knowing the fought for the South I never questioned why. I have read a lot of books on the War, two of the hardest are Shelby Foote's Triloguy and the Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government by Jefferson Davis. Now after I don't know how many books I have read I have learned that what I learned in Grade School and College were written by the Victors and as Paul Harvey says, there was a "Rest of the Story". American History has two sides, the one the government approves and the Truth. It's up to you the Student of History to find the Truth in history.
