Re: A Thought

The Southern minority dominated the Federal Government for most of the time between 1790 to 1860. For two thirds of this time the presidents were Southerners. NO NORTHERN President was ever reelected. All five two-term presidents..Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe and Jackson were Southern slave owners. Most House Speakers and Senate presidents pro term were Southerners, as were 18 of the 31 Supreme Court Justices.

The minority of white Southerners who lived in the South obtained and maintained a disproportionante power in the federal government by a number of means. In the US House of Representatives, Southern political power was magnified by the three-fifths clause , which provided that slaves would be counted as three-fifths of a person for purposes of apportiong congressional districts.

Southern influence over the presidency was reinforced by two informal means. The first was the unspoken sgreement that all national parties would have Southern members and would defer to demands of the Southern elite. on all matters relating to slavery. The second was the alliance of the South and Midwest, many of them small farmerssho viewed commercial and manufactoring as a grater threat to their interest than the Southern plantationowners. What doomed the South's exaggerated influence in the federal government was the steady rise of population that lived in the North...ie..Irish, German and British to the North. The South saw their privileged position could not last and decided to take their marbles away.Your statement that the Northern States had done what they wanted is not only wrong is most patently ridiculous.
