Someone else on this board said it much better than I ever could. Please forgive me for paraphrasing, because it was posted several months ago, but it made me do a lot of thinking.

So, to paraphrase that excellent post -- if you want to get worked up and personalize historical events that have impacted your life, then you should be paying attention to those events that have truly shaped our world -- the Battle of Tours, the Norman Conquest, the fall of the Roman Empire, etc. Those events determined the language you speak, the God you worship, and every other facet of your life. The loss of your great-great-grandfather's farm in 1865 pales to mere insignificance by comparison.
