Matt, I started studying the War like you, wondering why my ancestors fought for the institution of Slavery and standing for the outlaw government of the Confederacy.

I have read so many books now I get confused as to which one I reference what, but if you really want to know what motivated your ancestors to their actions you have to stop thinking in the present tense. I served the Flag of the United States during the Vietnam War, not in Vietnam incidently, but U.S. Army Europe. I spoke the pledge of alliegence in English and Spanish, no I'm Okie, no where near Mexican. I have experienced all that has been taught by clooeges and high schools and grade schools about the War for Southern Independence.

To learn, is to read. I suggest Shelby Foote's trilogy, and the Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government by Jefferson Davis. It took me a year to read all three of Foote's books, but they are knowledgeable and unbiased. The Rise and Fall is an eye opener, it should be required reading for all Southerners.
