Most of the time they called them by their state.

I went back and read many O.R. comments that used the word Americans. In every case, Confederate and Union, they were talking about native born peoples no matter what your government or state. You were either American or Irish, etc. But most of the time they mentioned your state of origin...Ohioans, New Yorkers, Alabamians, etc; or just plain Yankee or Reb, Unionist or Secessesh.
