Sorry, Stephen
In Response To: Re: Oops! My bad! ()

Stephen, my Cuz' told me that I had failed to answer your email. I do apologize, my friend. When I got out of the hospital I had over 150 emails waiting for me, mostly people wanting me to share some particulars from my Arkansas research. I remember your email, I think you were passing on a request to expound on the Confederate recruiting activities around Dallas, Arkansas. Stephen, I have your request in the queue, and I promise to write up a little narrative for you to pass on to your friend. I do apologize for taking so long. I will get all my emails answered.

As to phone calls, that's a long, bitter story. A gas exploration company discovered a huge deposit of natural gas in this part of Arkansas, and they've been hounding us landowners to death. We've been getting phone calls every night for the past several months from some Oklahoma speculators, pestering us to lease them the mineral rights to our land so they can set up gas wells. They just won't take no for an answer, so in desperation we just quit answering the phone when the caller I.D. shows an Oklahoma area code. I plumb forgot that you lived in Oklahoma. Email me your phone number and I'll place it next to the phone so I can recognize it when it comes up on the caller I.D.

I miss the give and take on this very frisky message board, but it's all I can do to keep up with the Arkansas board these days. My health just isn't very good any more.

I plan on being around for many years to come, but just in case, I added a codicil to my will which bequeaths all my Civil War books, papers and research to the Butler Center for Arkansas Studies in Little Rock upon my death. I've worked too many years to document the service of our Arkansas Heroes in Gray to let it sit and moulder in an attic. Hopefully, some future researcher will pick it up where I left off and run with it.

Well, on that pleasant note, I'll bid you adieu. My cousin Matt and Karen are going home bright and early tomorrow morning. It looks like he really kicked things around on the ole News and Views board, but you'd like him if you met him. We were as close as brothers when we were kids, then he joined the army and I joined the navy, and we drifted apart. He pulled three tours in Vietnam, has more medals than a French admiral, and retired as a sergeant-major. Don't judge him too harshly.
