Catholics and Lincoln

I have been reading some of the correspondance in 1863 between Jefferson Davis and Pope Pius IX and Lincoln's reaction to it.

It would seem that there is a theroy in which Pope Pius IX didn't have much regard for Lincoln. And was a supporter of The Confederacy, including becoming involved in getting Davis released from Prison.

It seem that late in the war the Catholics abandoned the Union army in droves including 75% of the Irish Catholics who deserted. If this is true the Irish accounted for 1 out of every 2 Union desertion. This seems extremely high. But if true would seem to indicate something very dramatic was going on.

But finally in all of this it would seem that even the Surrats were Catholic and that reportedly John Wilkes Booth had recently converted and was wearing a small Catholic (?) medalion at the time of his death.

It would also seem that the overthrow of Pope Pius IX in 1869 and the destruction of the Papal state may have been instigated within the United States through political negociations by Garibaldi with the French who had been providing protection for the Pope.

This is something that I haven't really been aware of in the contemporary histories.

Has anybody seriously looked at this perspective?
