It would make sense for the Irish to desert when they started bringing free negros and slaves into the Army. The Irish hated the Black man. One thing I read I found strange is Robert Gould Shaw of 54th Mass. fame, hated the Irish as much as the Irish hated the black. His letters noted a distinct hate for the Irish. Could it have been because of Catholicism?
