Not so silly at all. Since Lincoln backed an attempt by none other than Santa Anna (of Alamo fame) who was in Cuba at the time, to overthrow Maximillian in Mexico in 1864.

He did this because of the French in Mexico were supporting the Confederacy by allowing free trade across their borders.

Lincoln and his cronies were the type of people who would stop at nothing to surpress anyone who did not agree with them. And that War didn't stop in 1865 as the reconstruction era of our history attest.
