Re: What was Lafayette fighting for?

But, don't you realize that it is the same thing?

The institution of slavery was not unique to just the southern states of America. Nor was it unique to just the period of 80 odd years that there was a United States prior to the American Civil War.

Slavery existed 4,000 years in all cultures of the world prior to there ever being a Confederates States. And it still exists today. And if you and Lafayette condeam slavery in the United States, whether it is in 1776 or 1860, you are not released from the moral responcibility of ending slavery elsewhere simple because it is not in your backyards.

Yours, Lincolns and Lafayettes jobs are not finished just because the American Civil War ended, if ending slavery was the real purpose for fighting that war in the first place.

So yes, Darfur and the Sudan and ending slavery anywhere else in the world is very much a part of your responcibilities if you believe that slavery is morally wrong.

The Macedonian call from the Bible Book of Act, chapter 16, verses 6 - 13 says "come over and help us". Doesn't that apply not only to saving their souls, but also to helping them win their freedom from slavery also, if ending slavery was such a morally right thing to accomplish?

Are the people in slavery in the Sudan any less deserving to have someone come and fight for their freedom, as Lafayette did for America in 1776, or as the soldiers of the Union Army did in 1863, as were the slaves in the south?

Your arguements that the American Revolution, or the Civil War, was fought to free the slaves are hollow, because first Lincoln did NOT free those in servatude in the Northern States first. And second, because you will not have the courage of your convictions today to be willing to free others who are still in slavery elsewhere.

You do not have to have an army. Be like John Brown. Take matters into your own hands and lead the way. Show us the right path. Go to Sudan and lead a protest march if nothing else. The job of ending slavery is not finished. Why do we sit on our past accomplishments of ending slavery in just the United States and no where else?

Lead the way and I and others may follow. But is that the problem? Maybe you really believe that no one will follow you if they are not forced to.

That's the thing isn't it? The Union army was already recruited and Draft laws were already enacted and the war was 2 years old before Lincoln declared that the Union War aims were being changed to freeing the slaves. It's kind of hard, in the U S Army that I was a member of, to say "I didn't enlist to fight for that, I quit."
