Martin, excuse me for butting in but I feel like I have to say something.
I don't believe anyone here has ever said that slavery was right. In context with the times, as with your ancestor, it just was. The Southern defenders now are doing just what they did then. Attempt to stop an invasion into our heritage and rights as people, human beings, with feelings. Just as you said your family had to do to defend themselves against atrocities from CSA soldiers, the Southern people had to do the same against Union soldiers and then again after the war during Reconstruction.
Debate points, but please do not assume anyone is in favor of returning to slavery.
