Re: Happy New Year

My mom grew up like that. She was born in 1922. My daddy's dad was born in Hartwell, Ga. but was pretty much raised in Bowman and Elberton. His dad was a circuit riding Baptist minister. They farmed to have food. Grandaddy told me his mom used to take the egg shells after breakfast and crush them, then dry them out in the wood stove and used some in her garden and put some in the chicken feed. He buried old nails and other pieces of iron so he could enrich the soil here. I believe the old Goss church is still up there somewhere. His parents are buried in Rock Branch Cemetery in Elbert County.
Grandaddy taught his New York born wife that black eyed peas were not only necessary on New Years, but going to be part of his dinner fare all year round.
