In when President Ford "gave" back General Lee's citizenship they (the historians in Washington) had to have known what I posted. It sounds like a political gesture, obviously this action was not necessary, General Lee was already a citizen. Although it was a year from the presidential election, it didn't hurt him to try to make friends in the South early. It doesn't take away from the gesture, it is still welcome.
