The Confederate Soldier

While reading through an old volume on the legions of Rome I came upon a bit of information I wish to share. It reminded me of the tattered remnants of the Confederate Army in 1865.

An old tale is told about a Roman emperor who, to show his power, ordered his most trusted Tribune to march his legion East, across Asia, to the end of the world. The Tribune did this and he and a thousand Roman soldiers vanished into an unknown land. This legion was never heard from again. They may have met their end on some unknown battlefield, overwhelmed by an army of barbarians and their eagles and banners taken as trophies by their enemies. One however can be sure that these men, out of pride in their legion and respect for their traditions, did march on , as long as one man remained on his feet.

And so went “Johnny Reb”, just as in the old days of the legions, for what he believed.

Anyone care to comment?
