Doyle,

My Great-Great Uncle was in on the burning of Chambersburg. He was a Corporal in Co. D, 22nd Virginia Cavalry of McCausland's Brigade. You are right. By the time of the Chambersburg raid, Confederate soldiers had seen an inordinate amount of destruction brought upon their homes and families by the Yankees. My Grandfather told me of his Uncle Hiram(My g-g-uncle), who was in his nineties when he passed on in the 1930's. Grandpa always said his uncle was a most unforgiving man. My Dad,as a young boy, knew "Uncle Hi", and he said the same thing. The Confederate soldier had seen 3 years of destruction on their home turf prior to the Pennsylvania raid and I guess things finally caught up with the Northern population. I have to assume that the majority of the Southerners on the raid were similar to Uncle Hiram.
