"Perhaps the two party system is the least of many possible evils"

I would have no problem with the two party system if it weren't for the internal party politics. Having been a minor elected state governmental official (School Board) I found out real quick that there is no such thing as a true independant person in politics if you wish to win reelection. You either toe the party line or you are isolated out. That is why I served my single term and left.

For true repersentative government there does need to be some limitation to partisan politics. I don't have the answer. Maybe the House could be independant, since it is supposed to repersent the people. And the Senate and President could have the political partys. At some point the people have to be repersented and not just two opposing political agendas.
