Gunny, I'm reading about the 82 Airborne's invasion of Sicily. The troopers were flying over the beach to land behind the lines when a Ma Duece opened on them. The whole fleet and invasion force, who had been strafed earlier by a couple of Luftwaffers, followed suit. About 40 C-47s were lost, some 60 paratroopers died, and almost 200 were wounded. Thereafter coordination was improved, the planes started wearing amber lights on their fuselage, and it never happened again, at least in Sicily.
