I have run across a couple of references to the use of dogs to track deserters and draft dodgers in Louisiana. There was a Captain "Dog" Smith who operated in and around Winn Parish. He apparently was a militia or home guard officer, and I have not satisfactorily identified him. Josiah Chambers of Rapides Parish is said to have used his "Negro dogs" in chasing deserters in that part of the state.
