My opinion the turning point of the war was at Champion Hill. Loring refused to obey Pemberton's order to move his troops to reinforce the left flank I
believe it was. Up to that point Pemberton had a chance to defeat Grant. This is according to Dr. Tim Smith's Champion Hill book.
