The number of men who served in the war is very different than the size of the armies during the war. Year end reports on the size of each army can be found in the O.R. Trying to determine how many people actually served during the entire war is a daunting task, since enlistments and commissions were fluid. The number of men total who served, wore a uniform, were attached to 30 day, 60 day state troops, non-combat service, were released for administrative reasons, health reasons, etc. would be much higher than the total size of the armies.
