General George B. McClellan was charged, and many acquisitions were made by radical Republicans and Unionist, that he was a traitor. Not only a traitor but a Confederate mole.

Some of the charges and witnesses charge direct communication with and support from the Confederates towards McClellen. That McClellan was purposely losing the war and helping the Confederate Army.

With this mind set, I cannot see how the Republicans could have easily handed over the presidency to General McClellan.
