It is a little known fact that the English Royal Colony of Georgia prior to becoming a part of the United States prohibited slavery within it's border.
The majority of southern sentiment was not against the abolishion of Slavery itself. But, against the abolishion of slavery without just compensation as promised under the property rights section of the 5th Amendment to the United States Constitution.
