Re: Hollow Square

I bet it's fun to do. I have always wanted to see what it felt like to have been in the British squares at Waterloo. I've never performed the manuver. Although there was an instance when our battalion was charged in the open by cavalry and we had no flanking support. That was extremely unnerving. We were playing for keeps we would have been overrun because we only had time for one volley, that's it. A square would have been more comfortable than a line of battle in the open. It would have given some of us time to reload.

Talking about manuvers. Here's my favorite. Have you ever seen the movie "Zulu"? There is a great scene where the British infantry perform a rolling advance with two ranks. They had Martini breech loaders and could reload fairly quickly. I've have been involved in several of these rolling advances, our unit practices it often, but we use four ranks instead of two because of our muzzle loaders and it really works well to break up a breach in your lines. It puts alot of fire power into a small area and keeps the enemy from advancing. FUN!
