Re: Hollow Square
In Response To: Re: Hollow Square ()

I was an NCO in the regular Navy, and an officer in the Coast Guard Reserve. Retired from the Reserves a few years ago.

Chase, my vote would go to the Spartans. Their culture is the only one I know of where virtually the entire society was essentially a military organization. I'm sure you've read how newborn babies were examined for any defects that would preclude the boy from becoming a soldier, or a girl from becoming a strong mother. Infants deemed to be 4-F were killed or allowed to die by exposure. Young boys were taken from their homes at an early age and placed in their version of a military academy. Later, when they entered the army, they were not allowed to marry until they were in their 30's, but husbands were still required to live in the barracks. All non-military functions (production of food, manufacturing of goods and weapons, and just about everything else) were performed by slaves or conquered neighbors. Spartan men were soldiers, and nothing else, until they were too old for military service. I don't know of any other society that was so completely geared to a military culture.
