Didn't the springfields Custer's men carried have the range on what the Indians were carring? I know they had to have had a larger cartridge size than the Winchester or Henry.

Yes, if he could have gotten his command into a compact formation. I think he went in to the fight as an assualt and strung himself out. Bad luck.
