NATIONAL GUARD SHAMED

Alabaman's Confederate Veterans Beg to Be Allowed to Stamp Out the Striker's Disorders

Birmingham, Ala., Aug. 24.—There is a feeling in Birmingham tonight that some important devolopments in the strike situation are imminent. It is even said to be probable that the strike may be called off this week. Vice President John P. White of the United Mine Workers, who has been in this District for several weeks, left Sunday morning for Cincinatti and today had been in conference with President J. L. Lewis of the national organization, about the Alabama situation. While nothing can be learned definitely it is learned that G. B. McCormick, president of the Alabama Operators' Association, received a telegram from Mr. White this afternoon asking him if he would consent to a committee from the association meeting Mr. White.

This Mr. McCormick is said to have wired a declination on the ground that the operators have nothing to discuss with the miners' union. This, together with developments during the day, may lead many to believe that some important stop either for or against settlement is to take place within the next day or two. All is reported quiet in the mining camps tonight. Commander J. W. Bush of the Fourth Brigade, Alabama Division of the United Confederate Veterans, has issued a statement in which he calls upon the authorities to declare martial law for three days in order that citizens might be disarmed. After reciting the recent outrages, he concludes:

"I fought through the Civil War for four years, and I now command a brigade of twenty-six camps of Confederate veterans, and I believe we can gather enough active veterans to aid in disarming of those men who are causing the whole state so much inconvenience and filling every household with the deepest anxiety. Temporizing with marauders, rapists and incendiaries will do no longer. Action is the word.

"Arm the Confederate Veterans and we will take the field and let the National Guard go home to their business, which needs their presence."
