Bannerman Castle

No this isn't a castle found in Europe.

Francis Bannerman is reported to have owned the largest collection of Civil War surplus. Enough surplus to outfit entry armies. He started buying Union and capture Confederate military equipment of all kinds as soon as the war was over. His business was so large that by the Spanish American War (a source for more surplus) he was told to move his business to remote place away from the public.

He built Bannerman Arsenal on Bannerman Island (or Pollepel Island) in the Hudson River in New York. Mr. Bannerman died in 1918. In 1920 the powder house exploded destroying portions of the outer wall and blew windows out all along the river.

By 1968 the Island had been abandoned and was bought by the state of New York. In August of 1969 another series of explosions rocked the island setting the castle on fire gutting it out. Since then the island has been declared off-limits to the public.

Civil War artifacts of all types are found there today.

Bannerman Castle Trust is responsible for the island
