Re: Reparations for former slave owners

Many Southern slave owners were given payment for their slaves freedom (with a stint in the army first). In those areas already under Union occupation or control at the time of the E.P. taking effect, those who could prove loyalty to the Union, could turn in their military aged male slaves for bounty (I believe the slave owner was given about $300) to be immediately enlisted into the Union Army. Thousands of slaves were turned into soldiers in this way in Missouri, Tennessee, Louisiana, etc.

So ironically the Union Army was involved in the slave trade.
