There is a large population of Mennonites in Mississippi. Quakers were found in the South prior to the Civil War and a large population of German Moravians, in which my ancestors associated with, were also found in first Georgia and later the Carolinas. Some of my best neighbors in Mississippi were Mormans.
As for the north and its not depending on bondage, nearly half the first colonist to Plymouth could be considered indentured or bonded servants. One of my ancestors on the Mayflower, George Soule, was an indentured servant.
