It is difficult for me to know any of this is factual. It would seem that homosexuality is not a favorite subject to write about in mid nineteenth century America. Now the writings of T. E. Lawrence, fifty years later, was totally candid about homosexuality in the British army. Until I find some better evidence than assumptions I cannot say if I think it true or not.
