Re: Jeff Davis' disguise

I have never heard that part about the rain. That is interesting.

She said she threw the shawl over his head to disguise him as a woman. In fact, when he and the black girl were ordered to halt, she told the soldiers it was her mother.

Jeff Davis was the only president of the Confederate States and for that he should be remembered. He was also human with a lot of human frailties. Just like our modern hero John Kennedy, he was a womanizer and had a lover till he died. Whether they consummated the relationship or not is only hinted at in his letters to her, but he was in love with Miss Clay. When he was mad at Varina, he wrote to her that he had a woman he could visit where he was staying. The woman who bequeathed Bouviar to him was one of his conquests.

There are other examples of his humaness, but you need to read some diaries and memoirs. The books written by historians only tell part of the story but the diaries and memoirs are more truthful. I believe in our search for the truth, we should be honest about our side as well as the other. Does that make me less Southron to point out these things? I don't think so. I take the bad along with the good and there is plenty of both. I do respect your right to whatever your belief.
