I read today that in early 1861, or at the beginning of the War 1/5th of the US Army was stationed in Texas, either along the Mexican Border or along the Red River. At the outset of the War the forts in Indian Territory were abandoned by the Union Troops. These forts were then taken over by Texas Troops at the order of the Texas Governor.

Now the Chickasaw Tribe requested the forts be manned, but where did the State of Texas have the authority to give the order to do so? These Texas troops were not CSA.
