Re: CSS Stonewall-/Stærkodder/Kôtetsu

Mark,

"rotating turret guns"

I believe the turrent was fixed and did not rotate, with limited arcs of fire.

Good subject. There were three ships of this class built for the Confederates but the Stonewall was the only ironclad that made it to Confederate hands. I would say the Stonewall was the weaker of the class that could have made it into the Confederate arsenal. Several other classes were built.

The Mississippi and North Carolina, built at Burkenhead, 2,750 tons, two rotating armoured turrents, speed 10.5 knots, crew of 153, four 300 pounder guns, shallow draft for river use but a deep water hull for rough seas. Taken by the Royal Navy.

Another ship, named by Denmark as the 'Danmark' was built for the Confederate Navy. It was a fully armoured, iron hulled broadside frigate built in Scotland: 270 feet long, 50 foot wide, weighed 4,747 tons, speed 8.5 knots, crew of 530, twelve 8-inch rifled guns, twelve 6-inch rifled guns, two 18 pounder guns, eight 4 pounder guns. Because the South could not get final money on time it was sold to Denmark.
