General Robert E. Lee's rank

Did you know that most all of the famous portraits (all forms) of the great Robert E. Lee show his rank of Colonel and not General? The 3 stars on his collar was the rank of Colonel, the rank he held in the US Army. He refused to wear the rank of General saying he would only wear it after the Confederacy won the war and was truly Independent.
