Mr. Grant said "if I had thought the War would have been about slavery, I would have fought for the South". Or something like that.

I have five Southern Unionist in my tree, three from the 1st Arkansas USV Infantry, the other two were from Alabama. One of those two in Sherman's Bodyguards the 1st Alabama Cavalry USV. None of these were galvanized and I have read aletter from the Arkies that they were against secession. The Alabamans were from Morgan and Winston Counties, the mountains. They were anti slavery, pro-Union.
