Re: Birth of Memorial Day
In Response To: Birth of Memorial Day ()

Loved the story of Aunt Sue.
Knowing how all Southern folks are kin to all other Southern folks, I cannot help but wonder if Aunt Sue was not related to all of my Vaughan kin. Does anyone happen to know the name of her husband?
Mine left Mississippi in the 1840's coming on to central Arkansas.
My gg grandfather, William Robinson Vaughn/Vaughan, supposedly signed the constitution when Mississippi became a state. I may have stated that wrong, but I have seen and heard that all my life. If anyone knows how to correctly state it, please feel free to correct me.
William Robinson Vaughn/Vaughan died flat broke in Little Rock, Arkansas in around about 1876 because among other things he refused to sign an oath after the war. If he had signed, it is my understanding he would have received some money for that which the Union forces took from him when Little Rock was taken in September of 1863. He said it had cost him too much and just flat refused to do so.
Thanks for sharing.
