Re: Order of Heroes of America
In Response To: Order of Heroes of America ()

Though there was some evidence of "Red Stringer" activity in mountainous SW Virginia, the lack of substantial evidence suggests the usual hysteria that characterized the Confederate government. Such activity in the aforementioned 54th Virginia was mainly confined to Co. D, from Floyd County. Their Captain was a disgruntled Unionist, who convinced nearly his entire command to desert in Georgia. I'm proud to say that records show my gr-gr-grandfather in loyal Co. F served until the final battle at Bentonville.

Incidentally, the 54th is a fascinating regiment, being one of only two Virginia infantry units permanently assigned to the AOT. They fought in most of the battles in the Western theatre, and by the end of the war had operated in 8 states.
