I went back and read Barksdale's report. He said that the Mississippi men here faced great odds against a horde of Union troops. The men were overwhelmed and fought hand to hand using their guns as clubs. Finally succumbing to the heavy weight of Union troops the heights were abandoned. The next morning this same spot was reoccupied by the Confederates.
The picture seems to agree to what happened here. Also I just noticed the shadows; this picture was taken in the mid afternoon.
