Quick trip

Went over to Amite County, Mississippi last night to see cousin Virgil Roberts and spent today grave-hunting for the burial site of Pheobe S. Robertson, 3rd wife of John F. Roberts, 7th Mississippi. It probably cost Virgil a paint job for his truck but he scratched his way through the woods where we visited several old cemeteries. When I say woods, I mean deep woods, in the Homochitto National Forest.

Finally we got to the old Robertson place. It is falling down now and I was too scared to go inside without my snake proof lucky mood watch. I did peep through the windows and walls though. That by itself was a real treat.

Virgil had been told by a man whose Dad was a real son of a Confederate Veteran about two old graves near there "On top of a hill". Virgil found the hill (we were on foot) and we estimated it's height 60-70 feet. Pretty steep too. Sure enough, there were two graves on top of this hill that had pieces of home made markers. We poked around in the dirt and found all three pieces of one and after putting them together read the words... "Pheobe S. Robertson, beloved wife of J.F. Roberts" and had her date of birth and date of death.

Now, this was important because John F. Roberts married my great-grandmother in 1888 in St. Landry, Parish, Louisiana. Pheobe Robertson has had a date of death reported as 1890, which would have meant grandpa John was doing something he shouldn't have. But a date of death of 1890 would clear his name. I had waited for this moment for years but we could not tell if her date of death was 1880 0r 1890 and I'm back to square one.

It has been my dream to clear this old vets name but I guess the Good Lord wants me to ponder on this and search for the answer a little longer.

Overall it was a great day. I can't recall how many Confederate graves we visited. We even went by a site where some Union vets are reportedly buried and Virgil told me his plans for ordering them some headstones. I wish all of you had a cousin like V to take you into the woods and introduce you to history.

Thanks for letting me share today's experience :-)
