I seem to remember, in reading about that campaign, that Lee wanted Early to either fight Sheridan or return to Petersberg. After quick sucess, he allowed the troops to slow and ransack the Union camps, until Sheridan had time to regroup and turn the "early" victory into defeat, resulting in the capture of Alexander N.
